AI search for financial advisors: how to get recommended by ChatGPT

More prospects now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI for an advisor before they click a single link, and those answers name only two or three firms. AI tools choose them from what the web says: above all your own website, then directories, reviews and mentions. Here’s how it works, how to check what AI says about your firm, and the seven things that get an advisory firm recommended.

What AI search is

AI search is when someone asks an AI assistant a question and gets a written answer instead of a list of links. For advisors, the main engines are:

  • ChatGPT, which searches the web when a question needs current information, and cites its sources.
  • Perplexity, an answer engine built around live search and citations.
  • Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI summaries at the top of Google results.
  • Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, which increasingly search the web for questions like these.

Ask any of them “Who’s a good fee-only financial advisor for physicians in Denver?” and you’ll get a short answer naming a few firms, often with a sentence on each and links to the pages it used.

Why it matters now

A list of ten links gives every firm on the page a chance. An AI answer names two or three, and the prospect may never see anyone else. If your firm isn’t one of them, you don’t lose a click; you lose the chance to be considered, and you never find out.

The shift shows up in search data. Monthly Google searches for “financial advisor near me” averaged 75,292 in 2024 and 47,858 over the last twelve months, down 36%. People haven’t stopped looking for advisors; more of that search is happening inside AI answers.

How AI chooses which firms to name

When an AI tool answers a question like this, it typically runs web searches, reads the pages it finds, and writes an answer from them. So the firms it names are the ones whose information is findable, clear and consistent:

  • Findable: your pages show up in the searches the AI runs.
  • Clear: they say plainly who you serve, where, how you charge and what you do.
  • Consistent: your site, directories and reviews agree with each other.

Your own website matters most. When WebsiteTherapy, our sister service for therapy practices, tested live AI answers recommending the practices it manages, 17 of the 19 sources the engines cited were the practices’ own websites.

Check what AI says about you

You can run a quick check yourself in about twenty minutes. In ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, Gemini and Google, ask:

  1. Who’s a good fee-only financial advisor for [your niche] in [your city]?
  2. Best fiduciary financial advisor near [your town]
  3. Should a [your niche] hire a financial advisor or use a robo-advisor?
  4. How much does a financial advisor cost for [your niche]?
  5. What do people say about [your firm name]?

For each answer, note:

  • Is your firm named? Which firms are named instead?
  • Which pages does it cite? Are any of them yours?
  • Is anything it says about you wrong or out of date, such as fees, minimums or services?

Answers vary from run to run and engine to engine, so look for patterns rather than one result. Our free AI Visibility Report runs these questions systematically across engines and shows you the pattern.

Seven things that get you recommended

LeverWhat good looks likeWhy it matters
Your own websiteThe site states who you serve, where, how you charge and your minimums, in plain text, with a page per niche. In WebsiteTherapy’s live tests, 17 of the 19 sources AI engines cited were the businesses’ own websites.
Content coveragePages that answer the specific questions prospects ask AI, written answer-first.AI tools tend to quote pages that answer the question directly.
Directory listingsComplete, consistent profiles on the directories AI tools read, such as NAPFA, XY Planning Network and Wealthtender. They corroborate your website and fill gaps when your site doesn’t say something.
ReviewsReviews on your Google Business Profile and directories, gathered within the SEC Marketing Rule.AI answers often summarize what clients say.
Search-index coverageEvery important page indexed in the search engines AI tools draw on.An answer engine can’t cite a page its search tools can’t find.
Mentions and profilesA complete LinkedIn presence, plus podcast, press and community mentions.LinkedIn and Reddit showed up as the most-cited domains in WebsiteTherapy’s scans.
Structured dataSchema markup describing your firm, your advisors and your FAQs.It lets machines read your facts without guessing.

Most of these are the same foundations that win in Google, which is why we treat AI visibility as an extension of SEO for financial advisors, not a separate trick.

What nobody knows yet

Be wary of anyone who claims certainty here. What’s still unsettled:

  • Answers vary. The same question can name different firms on different days, so single checks mislead; trends matter.
  • Engines differ. Each draws on different search sources, so you can be named in one and missing in another.
  • Tactics are young. Files like llms.txt and AI-specific markup are cheap to add but unproven; clear content and consistent facts are not.

That’s why we measure what each engine says about your firm every week, rather than assuming one fix works everywhere.

AI answers and compliance

AI answers are written by the AI, not by you, so they aren’t your advertisement. But the pages and profiles they draw on are, and they must follow the SEC Marketing Rule. If an AI states your fees or services incorrectly, the fix is to correct the source: your site and your directory profiles. And think twice before quoting an AI’s praise of your firm in your own marketing, which would turn it into your advertisement.

TrustVis tracks what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI answers say about your firm every week, and fixes what keeps you off the list, with every change approved by your compliance officer. See plans and pricing.

Questions advisors ask

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There's no paid placement inside ChatGPT's organic answers. Being recommended comes from what the web says about your firm: your own site, directories, reviews and mentions.

How do I find out what ChatGPT says about my firm?

Ask it the questions your ideal clients ask, with web search turned on, and note which firms it names and which pages it cites. Repeat in Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers, because each engine draws on different sources. Our free AI Visibility Report does this systematically.

Is AI search replacing Google for financial advisors?

Not replacing, but taking a share. Google searches for 'financial advisor near me' averaged 75,292 a month in 2024 and 47,858 over the last 12 months, down 36%, while more people ask AI tools instead. The fundamentals that win in Google also help in AI answers.

What if an AI tool says something wrong about my firm?

Fix the sources it's drawing on: make the facts clear on your site, correct outdated directory profiles, and keep your fees and credentials consistent with your Form ADV. You can't edit the AI's answer directly, but answers change as their sources change.

Does llms.txt help financial advisors show up in AI?

It's cheap to add and does no harm, but there's no clear evidence yet that the major AI tools rely on it. A clear website and consistent facts across the web matter far more.
