SEO for financial advisors: the 2026 playbook
SEO for financial advisors means ranking your firm for the searches your ideal clients make, like “fee-only advisor for physicians” or “fiduciary near me,” with pages that answer them better than anyone else. In 2026 it also means being named when prospects ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI for an advisor. The good news: most niche advisor searches have very little competition.
What SEO means for an advisory firm
Prospects find advisors through four kinds of searches, and a complete SEO plan covers each:
- Local searches: “financial advisor near me,” “fee-only financial planner Denver.” Won mostly through your Google Business Profile and location pages.
- Niche searches: “financial advisor for physicians,” “financial advisor for divorce.” Won by a dedicated page for each group you serve.
- Question searches: “should I do a Roth conversion,” “how much does a financial advisor cost.” Won by answer-first articles and calculators.
- AI answers: the same questions asked in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews, which name two or three firms instead of listing ten links.
The searches prospects actually make
These are real US monthly search volumes. Cost per click is what advertisers pay Google for one visit; difficulty runs from 0 (wide open) to 100 (very hard to rank).
| Search | Monthly searches | Cost per click | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| financial advisor near me | 49,500 | $25.03 | 61 |
| financial advisor for retirees | 18,100 | $20.92 | 18 |
| fiduciary financial advisor | 14,800 | $24.40 | 16 |
| fee only financial advisor | 8,100 | $29.19 | 27 |
| roth conversion calculator | 8,100 | $3.39 | 13 |
| financial advisor for divorce | 4,400 | $15.86 | 13 |
| flat fee financial advisor | 1,600 | $41.57 | 10 |
| financial advisor for physicians | 210 | $62.77 | 0 |
Two patterns stand out:
- Broad searches are hard; niche searches are open. “Financial advisor near me” has a difficulty of 61. “Financial advisor for physicians” has a difficulty of 0, and advertisers pay $62.77 for a single click on it.
- The broad search is shrinking. Monthly Google searches for “financial advisor near me” averaged 75,292 in 2024 and 47,858 over the last twelve months, down 36%. People haven’t stopped looking for advisors; more of that search is happening in AI answers.

Local SEO and your Google profile
For local searches, your Google Business Profile often matters as much as your website. The essentials:
- Claim and verify the profile, choose an accurate primary category, and list the services you offer.
- Use the same firm name, address and phone number everywhere: your site, your profile and every directory.
- Get listed in the directories prospects use and AI tools read, such as NAPFA, XY Planning Network, Wealthtender and fee-only directories, with your fees and minimums stated consistently.
- Reviews can help, but they’re testimonials under the SEC Marketing Rule. Agree on a review approach with your compliance officer before you ask anyone.
Niche pages and content
The most reliable SEO win for an advisor is a dedicated page for each group you serve. A strong niche page names the group and the place in its title, describes their specific situation (equity compensation, practice buyouts, a pension decision), explains how you help and what it costs, and answers the questions that group asks.
Around those pages, publish content that answers your clients’ real questions:
- Comparison pages: fee-only vs. fee-based, flat fee vs. a percentage of assets, an advisor vs. a robo-advisor.
- Calculators people search for, such as Roth conversion (8,100 searches a month) and RSU taxes.
- Situation guides: the attending-year plan, the year you sell the business, the first year after a divorce.
Link each article to the niche page it supports, with descriptive link text, so search engines understand how your site fits together.
Technical basics
- Indexing: make sure Google can find and index every page that matters. Submit a sitemap in Google Search Console and check it for errors.
- Titles and headings: one clear H1 per page that names its subject; title tags that name the service, the niche and the place.
- Speed and mobile: fast loading on phones, without stacked pop-ups or heavy sliders.
- Schema markup: structured data for your firm, your advisors and your FAQs.
- Redirects: if you move platforms, redirect every old address to its new page so you keep the rankings you’ve earned.
SEO and AI answers
AI answers are built from web pages, listings and reviews. They tend to name firms whose information is clear, specific and consistent: who you serve, how you charge, your minimums and your location, said the same way on your site and everywhere else.
That makes AI visibility an extension of good SEO rather than a separate trick. The firms that do best publish niche pages and plain-text fees, keep their facts consistent with their Form ADV and directory listings, and check regularly what each AI says about them, then fix what’s wrong or missing.
Our free AI Visibility Report asks the questions your ideal clients ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI answers, and shows who gets named instead of you.
How long it takes and what it costs
Expect fixes and indexing improvements within weeks, niche rankings over three to six months, and broad local terms over longer. That’s why most SEO engagements, including ours, start with a six-month commitment.
On cost: advisor-focused SEO is advertised from about $800 a month for basic plans, and an Ahrefs survey of SEO professionals put the average agency retainer at about $3,200 a month. When comparing, check what’s included: who writes the content, whether the website itself is included, and whether compliance review is built in. TrustVis starts at $2,500 a month and includes all three.

Questions advisors ask
How long does SEO take for a financial advisor?
Technical fixes and indexing show up within weeks. Rankings for niche searches typically build over three to six months, and broad local terms like 'financial advisor near me' take longer because they're more competitive.
How much does SEO cost for a financial advisor?
Advisor-focused SEO is offered from roughly $800 a month for a basic plan, and an Ahrefs survey of SEO professionals put the average agency retainer at about $3,200 a month. TrustVis starts at $2,500 a month and includes your custom website, hosting, updates, content and AI search tracking.
Is SEO worth it compared with buying leads?
Paid leads are often sold to several advisors at once, and you pay for every one. SEO brings prospects to your own site, where every inquiry is yours. It takes longer to start, but the pages keep working after they rank.
Can I do SEO for my advisory firm myself?
You can do the basics yourself: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, publish a fees page, give each niche its own page and write titles that name who you serve and where. The ongoing work, especially regular content and technical upkeep, is where most firms get help.
Does SEO help my firm show up in ChatGPT?
It helps. AI answers draw on web pages and listings, and they tend to name firms whose sites state clearly who they serve, how they charge and where they are. The same pages that rank in Google are often the ones AI tools read.
